Santa Cruz Montessori Philosophy & History
Santa Cruz Montessori nurtures and guides children from 18 months to 15 years with a philosophy of quality education and exceptional care in a safe and nurturing environment. Our programs focus on building independence, a love of learning, and respect for self, others, and our world. At Santa Cruz Montessori we see education as a "preparation for life."
Established in 1964, Santa Cruz Montessori is a private school that meets the needs of the whole child, with a rich curriculum that encompasses the arts, sciences, mathematics, literature, language, social studies, and music. Santa Cruz Montessori serves students from preschool through Junior High/Middle School, from toddlers through ninth grade.
Santa Cruz Montessori is located on two beautiful campuses in Aptos and Soquel. Our Main Campus in Aptos serves children in our Primary and Elementary programs (ages 3-12 years). The Winston Campus, a half mile away in Soquel, serves children in our Young Children's Community (ages 18 months-3 years) and our Junior High/Middle School program (ages 12-15 years).

Join Romney Dunbar for a streaming video tour of Santa Cruz Montessori. See the children at work and play, learn about the program from some of our teachers, and get a glimpse of the classrooms in this informative presentation.
Montessori Education
The Montessori method allows the children to learn from one another. An atmosphere of quiet activity develops a feeling of mutual aid, fellowship and genuine respect for each other. The classroom is geared for success, allowing each child to find a challenge which is natural. The Montessori materials are designed to reach the mind through the hands, and to engage all of a child’s senses.
Parents and Community
Parents are an integral part of our school community. They are the first and primary teachers of their children, and when parents and school work in partnership, benefits for the child are multiplied.
Admissions and Tours
The admissions procedure is designed to give parents an opportunity to learn about the school, its philosophy and policies, and to meet our administration and faculty. It also gives us an opportunity to determine whether we are able to meet the needs and expectations of the parents. Our goal is to enroll families who will both benefit from and contribute to what the school has to offer. Santa Cruz Montessori admits students without regard to race, color, religion or national origins.
Our mission is to guide and nurture the natural unfolding of the whole individual in a developmentally based Montessori learning environment.
